He blinks for a moment.]
Ah... is that so? Of course, of course, one moment--
[FUMBLING. fumbling with those two books (his book and his tome) and trying to get gold off of him from one of his pockets and augh fumbling nope he's too clumsy for this
Books tumbling everywhere. Canas looks so distraught.]
Oh dear...
no subject
very (is that another book?)
very (how many books does he have?)
patiently (is this guy a walking library?!)
He's trying to be a tough guy but as the books start hitting the floor, he's already kneeling down to pick them up. Gee, guy, take better care of your books. Now they're all covered in sand and he's trying to dust and shake them off when one catch his eye. )
I know this book... ( He's pretty sure he's seen the same title in his grandmother's study. She'd whacked him with her hand when he tried to peek at it when he was younger. "Don't touch that!" She yelled before going on about how old, valuable, and difficult it was for a kid like him to worry with. Of course, that didn't stop him from going through it when she went out. Hugh would say this book looked newer than his grandmother's but to be honest, it was still probably as old as she was so he'll just say it looks "less old." ) What're you thinking bringing rare books like this in a battle?
( Actually: )
What are you doing reading out here?!
no subject
Look, it was supposed to be peaceful!! They weren't going into a ridiculous battle. He's sure of that. They were definitely not in the desert. He's also sure of that. But the books are more important, so he's just going to crouch to pick up the books as well, though he pauses at that.
... A blink.]
You know that text? But that is--
[impossible. It's the only one of its kind. That he borrowed it from his mother is only natural, for she's never truly minded his studies (encouraged them, more like). Except then he's interrupted by that shout.]
Ah, yes, that. You see...this is not where I am supposed to be. I suppose that strange aberration did, in fact, have some temporal and spacial anomalies... I had suspected there would be differences that would come of touching it, but for it to have transported me to a battlefield of an undefinable distance away from my original position--
[Canas, don't touch random glowing portals.]
This truly is an exciting discovery!
no subject
What? ( The problem isn't that Hugh doesn't understand. On the contrary, he understands perfectly well. It sounds almost like he's talking about warp or rescue staves for a moment. Hell, it even sounds like teleportation which some powerful mages have been shown to have mastery over in the past. The concept certainly sounds the same but neither is activated by simply touching, staff or no staff at all. ) You warped yourself out here on accident?
( He isn't sure if he should be impressed or judgmental. )
Yeah, that's real exciting but the fact is, we're in the middle of a battle. We can talk more about it when this is all over. You use ancient magic, don't you? ( He saw that flux tome and noticed a trend with some of those books earlier. ) We can fight together or if you need a handsome mage bodyguard, I'm your guy.
( For a price, of course. )
no subject
That is correct on all accounts.
[Yes, he warped himself here by accident. Yes, he uses ancient magic (and this young man didn't refer to it by the judgemental "dark magic" term that's tossed around by everyone, it seems. More and more, he's impressed).]
I shall fight alongside you, then. After all, you have been more than helpful, and I do owe you for that.
[He tucks the other books away and dusts off his Flux tome once more before nodding to Hugh. LET'S WRECK SHIT, desert maps, mages and druids, yeahhhhhh]
1/2
Dark magic, ancient magic. Same thing and he doesn't get it. Don't be too impressed just yet. )
Heh, you do owe me. ( Just a reminder. ) All right, let's see what you can do.
( Lets solo this map because have you seen Canas fight? Yeaaaaah, man! Hugh can barely keep up. It's hard to believe such a reckless guy could be such a tank on the battlefield. It kind of makes him wonder if he could do the same if he'd had the talent. )
no subject
mapbattle field. Don't mind Hugh fanning himself with what's left of that bolting tome he'd mentally been whining about about.D r a m a t i c s i g h. )
What are the chances of you warping us back to camp? ( Otherwise, start talking about this spell you set off. )
no subject
But once they've finally taken care of that desert level (phew), Canas is just going to. Settle for adjusting his monocle, looking thoughtful as he pages through his Flux tome. RUNNING LOW ON PAGES THERE too many mooks.]
Pardon?
[oh. warping. right.]
...The chances that I could recreate the circumstances that brought me here are...slim to none. [ahahahaha ha.. ha.... ]
My apologies... I could not guarantee that we would end up in any particular place regardless, as I am still rather uncertain as to how far from home I myself am.
[it is so much safer to walk.]
no subject
Heh, you'll figure it out. ( Encouraging! ) If you can't, you can work something out with the commander. He's just a kid but at least he's a good one.
Where are you from? If it's not too far, we can probably drop you off.
no subject
but Canas just looks thoughtful at that. Now that he thinks about it........didn't they resolve that war thing??? why is there a commander.]
Is that so... Who is your commander?
[... oh right.]
I was in Ilia myself. It is clear I've traveled quite some ways from climate alone, of course. Is this the Nabata Desert?
no subject
( Pinged by Ilia! )
Yeah, right in the middle of Nabata to be exact. ( Which isn't really exact. ) Pretty far from home, eh? You'll get used to the weather. ( Spoilers: You never get used to the weather. ) Well, more than the knights, at least.
[1/3]
[2/3]
Prince....Roy....
He knows Eliwood had a son, and he knows his name is Roy. That much is true. They were all very proud when they got the news. Good on you, Eliwood.
.... but that couldn't have been more than a year or so ago. Maybe less. Canas is bad at keeping track of time but not that bad.]
[3/3]
Prince Roy? But that's--that's impossible!
[...????]
I... Oh dear. I may be further from home than initially anticipated.
[IS HE EXCITED? IS HE AFRAID? OH GOD WHAT ARE HIS FEELINGS DOING]
no subject
And what is up with that look. )
... Hey, are you okay?
no subject
... ... ... What are his feelings doing?
His shoulders slump wearily.]
I... Oh no. [sigh] Of all the possible destinations... But I truly cannot stay--much as I would like to, because truly, this is unheard of in the academic community--! [...no, Canas, bad.]
That is. I mean. No, no I truly cannot stay here.
no subject
Yeah? ( He's so confused now. ) We can find you a pegasus escort at camp if you're in that much of a rush.
no subject
But yeah Canas, this might be clearer if you actually. Explain.
Though that offer does surprise him.]
Oh, that's very kind of you, but I'm afraid that won't help. You see, I believe there was, in fact, a temporal...ah, displacement along with the spacial--one that I did not notice until just now.
[...futuuuuure.]
You see, while I am aware of the existence of a Prince Roy...I highly doubt he shall be leading an army as an infant.
no subject
. . . )
Do you have a hood? ( Because the sun is obviously getting to you, old man. Temporal, really? Infant Roy leading an army? Hugh knows Roy is baby faced but he isn't actually a baby. ) Look, we need to get you out of the sun.
no subject
[OH. oh. It's not a genuine question. He gets it. Sort of. Maybe.
... A blink.]
Er. I assure you, my mental faculties are untouched, whether by the heat or otherwise. You see, Lord Eliwood recently announced the birth of his child. I'm quite certain Roy was the name...
[And. So. Logical conclusions???]
no subject
You're sure you didn't hit your head or something? He has to be at least fifteen or sixteen now. ( . . . ) Because the alternative would be...
( Impossible. )
no subject
Canas pauses to adjust his monocle, blowing out a faint sigh.]
Truly, time travel is only a vaguely passable theory. To imagine that such a thing occurred here... why, it's nearly impossible to believe!
[...and yet.]
But I am quite certain that Lord Eliwood's son is not yet sixteen, as we completed our task and finished the war not long ago at all.
[complete the war, as if it's a task on a to do list, ok canas]
It is difficult to even imagine another theory to postulate in a situation such as this, I'm afraid.
no subject
( If time travel was possible, someone would have gone back in time and prevented everything. This war would have never happened. Villages would be saved, families would be together, and everyone that had died because of this would still be alive. Of course, preventing the war wouldn't save his own parents who'd died long before.
If time travel was possible now, this would be Awakening and not Sealed Sword. )
There has to be another explanation. ( But he can't think of one at all no matter how hard he tries. And he's really trying. ) Listen, we'll get you to Ilia. I bet my grandma will have a better explanation.
Heh, never thought I'd want to see her any time soon.
no subject
[That was a rather stern and vehement refusal, though. But.... Ilia? Grandma? His grandmother must be someone well-versed in studied to be of any help here.
... well, he'll roll with it for now, even if he really does have to get back.]
In that case, I would be grateful for your help--ah, it strikes me that I never did get your name! My apologies. When I get caught up in these things, societal niceties do tend to go right over my head, aha...
My name is Canas. It has been a pleasure.
no subject
Mumbling, ) Maybe I'm the one who's been out in the sun too long. ( Mumble, mumble. )
... Hugh.
( And as natural as he can be, he watches for any reaction that this might be an elaborate hoax. )
