Random Scenario Thing

0 × Recruitment. I want you(!) to join our army! Remember to always give in to whatever ridiculous demands they want. Alternatively, they've just joined the army and you're trying to make a good first impression.

1 × Shopping. It's your duty to make sure the army stays supplied some how so make sure you pick the best weapons and sell what you need to get the funds. Wait, no! You can't sell that! It has sentimental value!

2 × Watch duty. Morning, day, evening, and night; someone has to keep a look out around camp! You wouldn't want any brigands or monsters to sneak into camp and cause trouble.

3 × Training. Wake up, wake up, rise and shine, daisies. Lesson one: A soldier must have discipline and what better way to prove that than by waking up before sunrise for some intense exercise?

4 × Healing tent. You used to be a great soldier until you took an arrow to the knee. Injuries are bound to happen on the battle field so you might as well get used to finding the healing tent now.

5 × Benched. You haven't been benched! You're just… holding down the fort while everyone else goes off to fight.

6 × Romance. Is now really the time for a confession? Did you even realize you were in love? Chat it up and get those A/S supports going.

7 × Restoration. The war is over and as much as you want to relax, there's still a lot of work that needs to be done.

8. × Desert level. The sun is blazing, the sand is hot, it's hard to get around, and did you just trip on some buried treasure or run into a mirage village's wall?

RNG. Shenanigans.

[He looks a little crushed when Hugh immediately denies their relation, but the longer he listens, the more his expression changes. It goes from crushed to bemused to thoughtful.

And finally, he just chuckles, looking quite entertained.]

Then you took after your mother more in that respect, isn't that so? How fascinating. You're clearly quite in tune with anima magic, which I must admit is a magic I was never able to grasp the intricacies of. I certainly could admire it, however; anima magic is truly an elegant expression of the natural world and its power. [blizzards]

But to have a child who is so well-versed is quite the pleasant surprise! Perhaps I could learn from you.

[this is Canas. Would he really be disappointed by this? Really. No, he looks rather excited, actually.]

( Don't look like that. It's for the better. His father travels through time only to find out his orphaned son is a talentless fool? He's spent too much time with his grandmother and not enough with his parents. And then he laughs. Yeah, go ahead and--... laugh?

He looks stunned by the news. He can't imagine grandmother being okay with that all. Even more, he's surprised to hear praise from him. It isn't something he gets very often and quite honestly, he doesn't know how to react so he focuses on something that isn't him.
)

Mother was a sage?

[He's cheerful enough about it, nodding simply.]

Indeed she is. Quite the talented sage as well; I've always admired the aesthetics of her spellcasting, something Elder magic simply cannot quite compare to.

[.................wait.]

You... you didn't know?

[They... how were they not around enough for him to find out that his mother is a sage? That doesn't--

Well, it does make sense. But not in ways that Canas would like to consider.]

( Three years ago, his grandma sent him away to study dark magic and along the way, he'd discovered he didn't have the talent for it. God, even a random orphan had more talent than him and he'd had the Hermit herself rattling dark magic at him for as long as he could remember. So that was it. He didn't have the talent for dark magic and he wasn't an Elimine priest. There was only anima magic, which he discovered he had a knack for but he could already hear his grandma's nags.

Anima was the most common magic of them all! Anyone with even half talent could learn anima magic! It was inferior to dark magic in every way.

But... his mother was a sage? His mother was a talented sage and his father admired her skill despite it being anima magic. In fact, he seemed to have a respect for it. He took after his mother and his father was okay with it. He could almost be happy. Almost if it weren't for...
)

You know how grandma is. We didn't talk about it. ( Because you were both dead. ) Anima magic isn't worth her time.

( Yeah. )

She'll probably throw me off the mountain the next time I see her.

[He doesn't understand, honestly. His son grew into an impressive anima mage, and that's a pleasant discovery, all around. Sure, there's a part of him disappointed in not being able to share that elder magic love with him, but it's a small part, made even smaller by the fates of his brothers.

Seeing his son fully grown, it is extremely difficult to imagine setting him on a path that might swallow him up like that. It's very difficult indeed.

And yet...now he's telling him that...he didn't know that his wife--Hugh's mother--is a sage? Honestly, Canas looks a little crushed at that, because...]

But I... I know I have certainly made mistakes, as far as acting as a proper father to you, but I had been determined to improve in that respect. Did I truly leave you with Mother so often as that?

[So yeah, death hasn't crossed his mind, he thinks he's still failing at the father thing and going off to pursue whatever random discoveries. Which, admittedly, is rather disconcerting, after the chat he's had with Nino, and his determination to improve.]

( This is a family reunion that wants to be happy but is just crushingly tragic all around.

Hugh acts like a bad guy but he has a good heart. Even if he barely remembers them, he loves his parents, and even if fate had other things in store for him, he wants his father to be happy. No, it's more than that. He doesn't just want his father to be happy, he wants to make his father happy. Great so he gets his father's approval in magic studies but still disappoints him in the end!
)

... You liked to read. ( That much, he remembers. Thank you, for walking into the battle field with your nose in a book because it triggered a memory. ) You read stories to me whenever you could and always had a new one to tell.

( Stories, not dark tomes. )
scholastic: (This shall be fascinating)

[For a moment, he's quiet, because he still doesn't understand how it could be that Hugh barely remembers both him and his wife. Or, maybe, he simply doesn't want to think of how that could be.

...But ultimately, he smiles. He has to. Because this is his son, and he's telling him that he liked to read him stories, and he could see that, he certainly could.

So really, he has to smile.]

Ah...well. Truthfully, you impressed me earlier with your comprehension and knowledge. I'm quite...proud to see that I would have such a thoughtful, intelligent son.

[Not only did he understand Canas' earlier ramblings about ~random portals~, he also helped him pick up his books. That's...well, Canas thinks that's worth quite a lot. Even if there are issues--and he doesn't understand still, some of what happens in the future, perhaps that's for the better.]

For my part, I suppose I shall have to make an earnest effort to continue to improve as well. I'm quite ashamed, truthfully, to think of how remiss I've been.

( "I'm quite proud to see that I would have a thoughtful and intelligent son.

Excuse you? No way, Hugh is totally a rough and tough mercenary trying to make a coin. He even charged his own father. This is the opposite of being kind and intelligent!

He truly isn't used to this sort of praise. Really. It would have been more appropriate to rattle him on the head with a walking stick and call him a talentless fool. At least then, he could get mad! God, Dad, he's trying to be mad here and you're looking like a sad pegasus foal in the desert.
)

Yeah? ( Yeah?! ) You can start by paying me the 600... no, 3,000 gold you owe me! ( 5 uses, 600 gold each. Check out that math. ) ... Maybe I can give you a family discount though.

( So what if he feels a little awkward and bad for charging his old man. Okay, yeah, he'll give Canas that discount. He tries so hard to be bad but he has a kind heart just like his father, after all. )

Okay, I'll give you the discount but on one condition!

[He's absolutely a sad pegasus foal in the desert. That's a very legitimate description. So he looks rather startled at the sudden demand for money, having forgotten all about that.

There are so many things he wants to ask. Why are you asking him for money--are you hurting for it? Are you a mercenary? Why did you not know your mother's magic growing up?

So many questions, but... Well, he's a little startled before he can even ask them by Hugh and his continued nonsense.]

And...what would that be?

[Blink. Blink.]
